Cleroy Campbell

October 18, 1913 ~ February 10, 2016 (age 102) 102 Years Old


Cleroy Campbell was the son of Harry and Jane Russ Campbell; grandson of Henney Campbell, Phillip and Mary Siples Russ; great grandson of Lucinda Russ Sheffield. Cleroy was born on Saturday, October 18, 1913.


Having lost both parents by the age of eight (8), Cleroy began working and worked for the next fifty-seven (57) years. His work included dipping turpentine, farming, pulp wooding and construction on the flight line at Eglin Air Force Base. His last employment was working on the construction of Interstate 10.


Cleroy was united in Holy Matrimony to Mary Ellen Hogans on Sunday, October 14, 1934. When Mary became ill in the 1980’s, Cleroy provided total care for her until her death in April 1992.


Cleroy attended adult night school at Mount Olive AME Church, where he learned to read and write under the tutelage of his cousin, Hubbard Campbell.


Cleroy is predeceased by the entire household of Harry and Jane Russ Campbell: Carrie, Theakley, Burry, Mary/Mollie, Alto, John K., Jeannette, Lueanna, Waverly, Harley and Bernell. Cleroy is also predeceased by nieces and nephews: Anna Randolph Paul, J.C. Siples, Alphonso Campbell, Patricia Campbell Byrd, Glenda Andrews and Harry Thomas Campbell.


Cleroy is survived by his caretakers: nieces: Mary Jane Campbell Andrews, Bobbye Jean Randolph (Johnny Ponds); nephews, Willie Burry Andrews. He is also survived by nieces and nephews: Roy Lee Andrews (Coreen), Dorothy Nell Campbell, Oliver Andrews (Drenda), Harley Campbell, Jr., Cathy Roulhac, Carolyn Campbell Brooks (Eugene), Judy Roulhac and Anthony Campbell (Trudy); many great and great-great nieces and nephews. Survivors also include three first cousins: Grace Russ Stonom, Ruth Russ Gipson and Peter Russ, Jr. He also has many second, third cousins, other relatives and friends.
Cleroy was loving, kind, patient, humble, never complaining, well-mannered...a true gentleman. He had an extraordinary memory.


Cleroy originally attended Campbellville AME Church, Euchee Valley, Florida. He later joined Mt. Olive AME Church, Red Bay, Florida where he served as a Steward and a Trustee.


Special friends includes Helen McCaskill, John W. Siples, Jr., Eddie Williamson, Jr., Eula Mae Randolph and the Reverend Anthony Johnson.

Cleroy transitioned from earth to Heaven at 11:17 A.M. on February 10, 2016. He is loved and always will be sorely missed by his family and friends.
