Alexander Sweet Smith, the oldest of three children, was born to the late Bisbee and Mary Sweet, December 25, 1922 in Gadsden County, Florida.. He was affectionately called "Smitty".
At an early age, he accepted Christ as his Personal Savior. His early education was in the public schools of Gadsden County. He later enlisted in the United States Army where he served his country in World War II. After serving in the military, he became employed at Eglin Air Force Base for over 30 years. He also owned and operated Smith’s Barber Shop in DeFuniak Springs, Florida for many years.
He was joined in Holy Matrimony on July 10, 1944 to the love of his life, Ruth Sophia Graham. They were blessed with two children, Alexis and Bernard. Smitty and Ruth maintained a loving and devoted relationship until the end.
In accordance with God’s will, on Sunday, July 9, 2017, Alexander Smith was called home to God.
Precious memories remains with those who loved him and the many lives he touched. Survivors include: his loving wife, Ruth; a daughter, Alexis (deceased); a son: Bernard (Beverly); two nephews: Joe (Katie) and Carl (Carolyn); sisters-in-law: Laura Palmore and Betty Graham; six grandchildren: Leah, Derien (Chris), Sophia (Cecil), Ryan, Alex, Andrea; eleven great grandchildren: Deonte’, Raheem, Cody, Antwan, Courtney, Caylen Alexis, Micah, Caiden, Ian, Lincoln and Braylon; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and godchildren.
Special recognition: we would like to send a special thank to Lewis Caldwell for his love and support for our grandfather during his illness. More than a family friend, he has been a second son to our beloved “Daddy Smitty”. We are forever grateful!
Sincerely,
The Grandchildren and Great Grandchildren
