Retired SSG Charles Edward Engram I, 71, was born on April 16, 1951 to Joyce Washington and Hurbert Milton in Lakewood, Florida.
He attended Tivoli High School where he met the love of his life, Veronica Engram (Sheffield).He and Veronica graduated from high school in 1969. Charles graduated from Daniel Payne College in Birmingham, Alabama, in 1973 with a Bachelor of Science.
After graduating college, he enlisted in the United States Army and married Veronica. Charles served as a MEDDAC in the United States Army for 20 years and retired as a SSG. He, Veronica, and their children (Tina, Charles and Charlanda) traveled and lived throughout Europe and the United States during his time in the Army.
Charles loved his family. He was affectionately known within his community as "Jam" and known by his grandchildren as "Buddy." While Charles never shared how he acquired the nickname "Jam", his family believes that it was in part due to his immense love of music. Charles loved uptempo music with an infectious beat. He passed his love of music on to his children.
Charles understood the importance of acquiring a higher education and he emphasized the importance to his children and grandchildren.
Charles is survived by his mother, Joyce Washington; his devoted wife of 48 years, Veronica Jewel Engram; his children: Tina Engram Roberts(Allen),
Charles Edward Engram II (Philana), and Charlanda Elaine Engram; his grandchildren: Allen Roberts II, Erik Roberts, Je'henna Engram, Kaitlin Oden,
Madison Oden, Charles Engram 11, Maliea Palmer, Aniyah Engram; his great-grandchildren: N'oelle Roberts, and Erik Roberts Jr.; and a host of beloved brothers, sisters, nieces, and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his father, Herbert Milton; Charlie Mae Whatley; Harvey Whatley; his father-in law, Rosby Sheffield; and his mother-in-law, Juanita Sheffield.
