Al "Pop" Hughes, Jr. of Crestview, Florida passed away Thursday, July 24, 2019 at his home after a decline in his health.
Al was born in Campbellton, Florida, March 27, 1920, but made Crestview, Florida his home at an early age.
He is an honored military veteran, serving in the United States Army as a Corporal in the Korean War.
Upon returning home, "Pop" exercised his entrepreneurial spirit by starting his own cement finishing business. His company can be credited for laying a large portion of I-10 and various other roadways in Florida spanning the panhandle to Miami.
An avid lover of Christian music, "Pop" started a singing group, The Gospel Echoes, who toured the Florida Panhandle spreading the good news.
"Pop" loved people and enjoyed his family who were the center of his life.
Al is survived by his wife of 62 years, Bettie R. Hughes, Crestview, Florida; sons: Lawrence Adams (Judy), Crestview, Florida; LaVaughn Hughes (Felicia), Upper Marlboro, Maryland; A. Russell Hughes (Lori), DeFuniak Springs, Florida; daughters: Beverly Holloway, White Plains, Maryland; Anita Radford (Chris), Hutto, Texas; sister: Luretha Robbins, Crestview, FL; fourteen (14) grandchildren and five (5) great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
